Being a small team of table top wargame fans, indie development studio Evil Twin Artworks got their hands on the ultimate dream project when they approached Games Workshop to develop a videogame based on the popular table top game, Man O'War. James Carroll, the studio's co-founder, describes what it means to bring life to a table top game with a passionate following.

Seasonality core 2 6 x 2. Man O' War Corsair requires a powerful computer to reach strong frame rates at 1080p. A GTX 970 or AMD R9 390 graphics card is the recommended requirement for GPU.

As table top wargame fans, what was it like getting the rights to Man O'War?

It was a massive deal for all of us. It was a long time planning to talk to Games Workshopand quite a while discussing our idea with them. For quite a few years, we had said we would like to make a GW game, but wanted to be in the right position to be able to do it. To be honest, we didn't really celebrate - we were too excited to just get started, though myself and my brother Mark, who is co-founder of Evil Twin, did play quite a few Warhammer Fantasy Battle games!

What is Man O'War: Corsair about?

Man O' War
, a game set in the Warhammer universe, is the studio's second game of the naval war genre, having previously developed Victory At Sea which was set in World War 2. Man O' War: Corsair is a large open world action adventure game where you plunder enemy ships, trade in ports as well as engage in boarding actions. The key obstacle: your enemies are flying monsters and terrible creatures looking to sink your ships.

How did your knowledge of Games Workshop's games come in handy during development?

We had a good bank of knowledge to begin with, though the universe created by Games Workshop is over 30 years old and is vast. I think someone walking into developing for them without some sort of grounding might find it a bit overwhelming. I do think you should be a fan of any game you make, and be as much of a fan as the community you want to engage. They will appreciate you more if you can honestly talk to them on the level they want, but they will come for you if you make any glaring errors!

Do you think that your love for table tops will shine through in Man O'War: Corsair?

One of the great parts of these table top games and what really brings them to life is the story you create around your adventure. The best games of Warhammer Fantasy Battlewe have played are always set around an ongoing campaign that builds up. Our favorite games of the board game Blood Bowl are when we play out an entire season and see how the players fare: nothing beats having half of your Halfling team being injured or killed in one game and then having to deal with the consequences in the next game! That is something we wanted to bring out of the Man O' War game. I do think that if you love what you create, it shows.

What makes this game different from other Warhammer games?

It has its own unique part of the Warhammer world. The fact that ours is purely a nautical adventure really helps it stand out: there is nothing scarier than being hunted by a 150ft Megaladon Shark. Man O' War: Corsair is also set in a different historical time period than other video games as well. While many new games are set in what is called the 'End Times' or in the Warhammer 40,000 universe (which is 40,000 years later,) ours takes place centuries earlier. We have consciously kept the game feeling ‘historical' and had a lot of fun keeping it true to the period but it did require researching a lot of older Warhammer publications referencing it.

When can we expect to play Man O'War: Corsair?

We are aiming for Steam Early Access in early 2016. Our plan is getting the community to help make the best game we can together. Early Access is not about getting the game out half-finished - we don't want people spending their time bug spotting. It's all about people sharing ideas and helping to improve the game.

What advice would you give other indie game developers to get their game 'out there'?

The one piece of advice I would give is to work with other indie developers to get the news out there. The games industry is pretty friendly and supportive - we all want to succeed. These people are not your competitors, they are your allies, so it's important to get out and become a part of that community.

What's next for Evil Twin Artworks?

We are still knee deep in Man O' War: Corsair, but we do have a couple of major projects ready to roll - we just aren't allowed to talk about them yet!

Evil Twin Artworks' toolset for Man O'War: Corsair includes Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max, integrated with Substance Painter for texturing and the Unity game engine. James Carroll is the co-founder of Evil Twin Artworks, TIGA Award winning video game makers and promoters of grassroots game development in their hometown of Swindon, UK.
